In the mid-Victorian period, mourning brooches were popular, in part because of the American Civil War. The Late Victorian saw the introduction of the first mass produced jewelry.  Diamonds were popular, as were amethysts, opals, moonstones, peridots, sapphires and rubies. Hunting themes were popular, as were insects such as beetles and butterflies and star and crescent designs.
